King’s College London
King’s College London has been awarded a grant of $1,680,500 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to fund Peace and Security Fellowships at the African Leadership Centre (ALC).
The ALC equips young Africans with the skills and knowledge to become leading analysts and policymakers on peace, security and development in Africa. It was first established in 2008 by King’s in partnership with Kenyatta University in Kenya.
The Carnegie grant will enable 21 young African scholars to complete Master’s courses in ‘Conflict, Security and Development’, or ‘International Peace and Security’ at King’s starting in 2010.

King’s College London and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) will jointly fund PhD students who pursue research degrees at King’s.

Successful applicants will receive a scholarship to pay their tuition fees and an annual living allowance which includes health insurance, a return airfare to London and visa application fees. The agreement between King’s and the CSC will be effective for three years with the first intake of PhD students expected in September 2010.
The Scholarship programme follows the establishment of King’s China Institute under the leadership of Xinzhong Yao, professor of Chinese Ethics. The Institute aims to encourage more British students to develop an interest in China, while also providing more academic support for Chinese students at King’s.
At present King’s has more than 400 students from China and Hong Kong. The university also has partnerships with institutions such as the University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Renmin University and Fudan University.

University College London
University College London (UCL) has launched a £1.3 million annual overseas research student scholarship award scheme. The scheme will support the most talented international postgraduate students throughout their studies.
The UCL Overseas Research Scholarships (UCL-ORS) will offer financial support to successful applicants from outside the EU. Awards will be given according to the academic excellence and research potential of each applicant.
The awards, available for 1, 2, and 3 years of a full-time M.Phil./PhD degree programme, will cover the difference between overseas and UK/EU tuition fees. You can read more about eligibility for the UCL-ORS here.

London students dominated this year’s HSBC Student Bursaries. Three students beat more than 3,000 entrants, each winning one of four £30,000 bursary awards given by HSBC to support talented students.

The winners were:
- Chandni Patel, Medical Genetics student, Queen Mary, University of London
- Mira Athanassouli, Languages student, King’s College London
- Zac Imam, Geophysics student, Imperial College London
Students were asked to explain why they should be considered for a bursary and they read out their winning entries at an awards reception held at HSBC headquarters in Canary Wharf.
The winners will receive £10,000 every year for three years to contribute towards their living and studying costs. HSBC will also keep in contact with the students to encourage them to achieve their goals.

King's College London
King’s College London has announced it is offering 50 PhD scholarships to help students in the College’s health schools pay for living costs and cover tuition fees. The 50 awards will be available to healthcare students across a range of disciplines including biomedical and health sciences, medicine, dentistry, nursing and midwifery.
The scholarships last for up to four years and will be funded by King’s in association with the Medical Research Council; Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council; the British Heart Foundation; Cancer Research UK, and other leading charitable organisations and industrial sponsors.
King’s is the most successful university in the country for PhD completion rates. Its health schools also run an innovative Researcher Development Programme which provides students with highly valued skills for careers in business, government, academia and the healthcare professions.
