King’s College London
King’s College London has been awarded a grant of $1,680,500 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to fund Peace and Security Fellowships at the African Leadership Centre (ALC).
The ALC equips young Africans with the skills and knowledge to become leading analysts and policymakers on peace, security and development in Africa. It was first established in 2008 by King’s in partnership with Kenyatta University in Kenya.
The Carnegie grant will enable 21 young African scholars to complete Master’s courses in ‘Conflict, Security and Development’, or ‘International Peace and Security’ at King’s starting in 2010.

Urban dancers at UEL
The University of East London (UEL) has opened two new state-of-the-art dance studios for their Institute of Performing Arts and Dance (IPAD).
The two large dance studios are in the heart of one of the largest artistic and cultural sites in East London and the studios will be used to train students studying the UEL’s BA Dance: Urban Practice.
The studios are the UK’s first teaching space devoted to Urban Dance Forms and East London is fast becoming a hub for urban dance innovation.

Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor and President of HKU, and Professor Rick Trainor, Principal of King’s
King’s College London and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have signed collaboration agreements to establish a dual degree programme in law.
International legal practice is increasingly requiring lawyers to be qualified in more than one jurisdiction. Consequently, students trained through this joint programme will be highly valued by international law firms and multinational companies.
The new dual degree in Law is a 5-year programme leading to the award of two degrees: the HKU LLB and King’s LLB in English Law and Hong Kong Law. For the first time, students will be able to study for two concurrent qualifying law degrees, spending two years in London followed by three years in Hong Kong.

University of Greenwich and MNIT sign agreement
Students in India will be able start a new MBA programme in October 2009.
The MBA International Business in India has been created by the University of Greenwich and the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT).
This collaborative partnership will give innovative technology managers the opportunity to improve their skills to succeed in one of the world’s fasting growing economies.
The MBA is one of a number of initiatives from Greenwich’s new Centre for Indian Business, which also offers work placements for graduates and students; short exchange programmes; and accredited degrees through partnerships with Indian universities.

A record number of students attended the London School of Economics (LSE) Summer School in Beijing this August.
The sixth LSE-Peking University Summer School attracted 240 students from 40 countries.
This year’s programme includes new courses, such as The Global Economy which join established courses in Law, Finance and Economics.
Students also had the opportunity to take basic Chinese language courses in the evenings, with a series of cultural and social events at the weekend for both students and teachers.

Roehampton University
Roehampton University has signed a cooperation agreement with the College of Technology at the Vietnam National University to develop a joint Master’s degree in information management.
The degree is the first in a number of Master’s degrees that the institutions will develop together, with a business Master’s next on the agenda.
This is the second South East Asia partnership for Roehampton, who recently established a relationship with the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia to run a joint MSc in Psychology, helping to address Cambodia’s shortage of psychology practitioners.

Goldsmiths, University of London
Goldsmiths, University of London are joining forces with global brand agency, The Brand Union, to launch a unique, international Master’s degree in Brand Development.
The postgraduate degree, starting in September 2009, will study contemporary branding and communications methodologies and their social, economic and political contexts.
Key themes such as intellectual property rights, the changing media environment, globalisation and the impact of digital communications and marketing technologies will also form part of the syllabus.
It is estimated that we are exposed to 3,000 brands a day, often subliminally. The new course will look at the art and science behind building a successful brand in this increasingly branded world.

King’s College London
King’s College London has launched its first Summer School which will open its doors in July 2009. The Summer School will teach courses in the arts, English language, humanities, political and cultural management. Students on the courses can also enjoy integrated visits to London’s world-class cultural institutions.
The programme is open to a broad range of students, from overseas students, who can also complete a pre-session English language course, to US students who will gain a credit or augment their Study Abroad programme.
Courses will run for three weeks and cover a range of subjects such as Shakespeare in London; Introduction to Business Management; and Understanding the Creative Economy. In addition to studying English language, students can also learn Arabic, French, Hindi, Mandarin and Russian.

The Law School at City University London has announced it is delivering its Maritime Law LLM for the first time in Greece, the centre of the world’s shipping industry. Modules from the LLM will be taught in the Laskaridou Library of Piraeus and will run twice a year, in both March and September.
All modules delivered in Greece are based on City’s LLM in Maritime Law and include: Carriage of Goods by Sea; Admiralty Law; Marine Insurance; International Sales Law; and World Trade Law.
London’s universities and higher education colleges already attract a large number of Greek students to London. The LLM in Maritime Law is a unique qualification and will give students an excellent insight into the Greek shipping industry while allowing participants who have employment or family commitments in Greece to take modules while remaining in the country.

Civil engineering students from the University of Greenwich swapped the lecture theatre for a construction site to gain valuable hands-on experience with leading industry experts.

Student work experience
Final-year undergraduates took part in the week-long residential project at Constructionarium to experience the hours, conditions and challenges of working on construction sites.
The scheme brings together the theory and reality of construction, preparing students for work in the industry. Students get involved with the project from the initial planning stages, each taking on different roles such as project manager, negotiator or power tool operator.
Students also worked with contractors and liaised with a design and engineering consultancy to examine detailed design work and technical drawings.
