Le Corbusier - The Art of Architecture at the Barbican (source:www.barbican.org.uk)

Le Corbusier - The Art of Architecture at the Barbican (source:www.barbican.org.uk)

Le Corbusier is widely acclaimed as the most influential architect of the 20th century and while he never designed any buildings in London, his influence and ideas dominated the designs of the city’s planners during the 1960s and 70s.

A major retrospective called Le Corbusier – The Art of Architecture is taking place in the Barbican Art Gallery in London, examining Le Corbusier’s architecture and radical ideas for reinventing the concept of a modern utopian living. But it’s his tiny summer cabin on display at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) that is the most impressive, and free to enter.

His holiday home, or Cabanon as he called it, has been re-created within the RIBA’s restaurant and you are allowed to explore the 14-square metre space, complete with bed, desk and bathroom. The half-mirrored windows would have originally looked out over the Mediterranean but in this re-creation you can spy on the diners as they tuck into meals prepared by Michelin-starred chef, David Cavalier.

The simplicity and human-scale of the Cabanon is a far cry from the plans and buildings associated with Le Corbusier the architect.

The development of gels that can protect people against HIV will receive more than £90 million of funding, following research by British scientists that suggests new medicines have the best chance yet of controlling the spread of Aids.

New research is developing gels that women can apply before having sex to prevent HIV from entering the bloodstream. A number of world-leading British research teams, including those at Imperial College London and St George’s, University of London, will be awarded funding to continue this groundbreaking research.

Funding will be supported by the UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is thought that with an Aids vaccine still decades away, such preventative medicines provide the most realistic strategies to protect people against HIV infection, a condition that has claimed more than 25 million lives to date.

There has never been a better time to study in LondonIt’s official, London is a cheaper city to live in than New York and many European cities.

There has never been a better time to study in London. For example, it is now 25 percent cheaper for American students to study in London than it was last year.

Weakening exchange rates helped London fall 19 places to number 27 in this year’s Economist Intelligence Unit survey. This represents great value for students who want to study in a global city and gain a world-class education. It is no wonder London is home to more international students than any other city in the world.

The Worldwide Cost of Living survey is an unbiased and independent guide to prices and products in 140 cities around the world. The survey considers costs such as accommodation, entertainment and also everyday costs such as buying a loaf of bread.

Rivington Place: a visual arts space with a difference (source: www.rivingtonplace.org)

Rivington Place: an arts space with a difference (source: www.rivingtonplace.org)

Rivington Place is an amazing building. Built by architect David Adjaye, an alumni of the Royal College of Art, its jagged roof was influenced by a Sowei mask from Sierra Leone.

The building is home to the first permanent public space dedicated to culturally diverse visual arts and photography in the UK and it regularly hosts a series of free exhibitions. Currently you can enjoy a photography exhibition by South African artist Santu Mofokeng, who has catalogued the lives of rural tenant farmers with a series of intriguing images.

In addition to the gallery spaces, the building contains the Stuart Library, a specialist reference resource for art students and researchers. It contains a unique collection of monographs, exhibition catalogues, slides and over 80 international art periodicals.

Unlocking your creativity has never been so easy.
